The Leon H. Sullivan Foundation was
established in 2001 to honor not only the life and
legacy of a great African-American social and economic empowerment leader
and international humanitarian, but to promote the
principles of self-help thereby empowering
underprivileged peoples, and advocating social
responsibility worldwide.
Named after the
legendary Reverend Leon H. Sullivan, statesman, world
leader and Philadelphia minister, the Leon H. Sullivan Foundation
seeks to perpetuate and expand the principles and
purposes of this great humanitarian.
Reverend
Sullivan, a man of tremendous courage, a servant of the
people and most importantly, a servant of God, passed
away on April 24, 2001. Over the years, he became known
for his ability to bring world leaders together, author
principles of social responsibility, and incubate
action-oriented programs. He was able to address
important social issues by establishing several
organizations throughout the United States and abroad.
Among the organizations Sullivan created are: OIC of
America, OIC International, The International Foundation
for Education and Self-Help, The Global Sullivan
Principles, and the Leon H. Sullivan Summit. These
organizations positively impact the lives of millions
throughout the world by advocating self-help, community
development and self reliance and by promoting the
principles of human empowerment.
To carry on the
spirit and great legacy of Reverend Dr. Sullivan, the
Leon H. Sullivan Foundation was established to
permanently continue the Reverend's work for generations
to come. By building an endowment and performing
government advocacy activities on behalf of the Sullivan
organizations, the mission of the Sullivan Foundation is
to create opportunities, both fiscal and programmatic,
for the national and international network of Sullivan
organizations.
The objectives of the Sullivan
Foundation are:
- To leverage funds and facilitate philanthropic
organizations' quest to alleviate human suffering
- To build human potential in the developing world
by focusing on economic development and national
infrastructure; literacy and health initiatives;
- To influence legislation to ensure that there is
adequate focus on support and empowerment of our
nations neediest and most difficult to serve
populations;
- To ensure that the organizations to which Leon
Sullivan dedicated his life continue to provide hope
and opportunity to needy people worldwide.
Reverend Sullivan's mission in addressing many
global issues has brought about change for many. We look
forward with great enthusiasm to the opportunity to
continue his great works by improving human rights,
social justice and economic fairness not only in
underdeveloped areas, but everywhere in the world.
