Q: What are the Global Sullivan Principles of Social Responsibility?
A: The Global
Sullivan Principles of Social Responsibility
(GSP) is a voluntary code of conduct that seeks to
enhance human rights, social justice,
protection of the environment and economic
opportunity for all workers, in all industries,
in all nations. The Principles were designed
to be adopted on a voluntary basis, by
all types of organizations around the globe,
with the spirit of exchanging ideas so
that society as a whole can benefit.
Q: What led to the creation of the Global Sullivan Principles?
A: The origins of the Global Sullivan Principles lie in suggestions made to Reverend Dr. Leon H. Sullivan, by various world leaders, that he develop a successor code of conduct worldwide in orientation to the original Sullivan Principles (which were instrumental in helping to dismantle apartheid in South Africa). After consulting with leaders of business, government and human rights organizations in many different nations, and receiving strong encouragement to go forward, Reverend Sullivan accepted this challenge and worked with others to draft the Principles. Reverend Sullivan announced the inauguration of the Global Sullivan Principles during a special ceremony at the United Nations on November 2, 1999, with UN Secretary General Kofi Annan.
Q: What is expected from Endorsers of the Global Sullivan Principles?
A: Endorsers of the Global Sullivan Principles are expected to maintain a continuous commitment to each of the eight Principles, within the laws and customs of each country where they hold operations, including the implementation of internal policies, procedures, training and reporting structures.
Q: Are subsidiaries, local branches and plant/factory operations accountable to their parent company that endorses the Global Sullivan Principles?
A: Yes. All subsidiaries, local branches and plant/factory operations ARE accountable to their parent company that endorses the Global Sullivan Principles. Any such operations are expected to uphold the same standard of commitment to the Principles that their parent company does.
Q: Why aren't the issues of sexual orientation and disability addressed by the Global Sullivan Principles?
A: The Principles’ stipulation to promote equal opportunity on the basis of gender, within the laws and customs of each country, is fully intended to include these rights on the basis of sexual orientation and preference as well. Furthermore, to the extent possible, the promotion of equal opportunity is most certainly intended to include those with disabilities. Reverend Leon H. Sullivan championed these issues often when speaking about the Global Sullivan Principles. This spirit is, and will be, carried on in speeches and interpretations regarding the Principles.

A: Simply complete the Endorser Registration Form and return it to the Global Sullivan Principles office. Your organization will promptly be added to the Endorser List. Within a few weeks, you will receive a follow-up packet in the mail with more information.
