A Leader on the Continent and a 2006 Sullivan Honoree: President Paul Kagame
President Paul Kagame is the 6th and current president of the Republic of Rwanda. Recognizing that his leadership has made Rwanda one of Africa’s greatest successes, the Leon H. Sullivan Foundation is proud to call President Kagame a 2006 Sullivan Honoree.
Throughout his presidency, President Kagame has achieved great strides in economic and social development as well as in governance. Rwanda has experienced a significant economic transformation with poverty rates decreasing and the standard of living greatly improving.
Thanks to the President’s long term development plan, Vision 2020, the real GDP growth increased from 2.2% in 2003 to 7.2% in 2010, with a peak growth of 11.5% in 2008. He has improved agriculture, tourism, and technology, allowing the people of Rwanda to continue to grow and prosper.
President Kagame has also been a champion for social development in Rwanda. He brought Rwanda to the international stage as a high achieving nation in gender equality, reconstruction and reconciliation, universal primary education, access to health care, and a continuous commitment to culturally-based initiatives.
With President Kagame’s leadership, Rwanda broke down gender barriers and reached the world’s highest percentage of female representation in decision-making institutions. President Kagame has also prioritized the provision of free basic education for all, quality health care (which has reached 90% of the population), and technology to aid in learning.
Armed with a new constitution, President Kagame placed great value on fair and transparent elections, in addition to policies on anti-corruption and good governance.
President Paul Kagame has shown the world the power of good leadership through the successes of Rwanda. For this, we are once again honored to call him a Sullivan Honoree.
