Principle #1: Express our support for universal human rights and, particularly, those of our employees, the communities within which we operate and parties with whom we do business.

GM has a number of policies in place that apply to employees and suppliers.  Since GM purchases $105 billion worth of goods and services from more than 25,000 global suppliers, it also has a specific Global Purchasing Supply Chain (GPSC) Policy to help manage this complex supply chain.

General Motor's Global Purchasing & Supply Chain Policy requires that any goods or services supplied must comply with all applicable regulations or standards of the countries of destination. These relate to the manufacture, labeling, transportation, importation, exportation, licensing, approval or certification of goods or services. This includes environmental matters, wages, hours, conditions of employment, subcontractor selection, discrimination, occupational health and safety, and motor vehicle safety. Each supplier must confirm, both at the time of contracting and periodically thereafter, that neither it nor any of its subcontractors will utilize child, slave, prisoner or any other form of forced or involuntary labor or engage in abusive employment practices or corrupt business practices.

Principle #2: Promote equal opportunity for our employees at all levels of the company with respect to issues such as color, race, gender, age, ethnicity or religious beliefs, and operate without unacceptable worker treatment such as the exploitation of children, physical punishment, female abuse, involuntary servitude or other forms of abuse.

General Motors and its leadership are committed to Diversity and Equal Employment Opportunity. The company's core value of individual respect and responsibility sets fundamental expectations for behaviors and actions that create an environment that allows everyone to fully contribute to total customer enthusiasm.

Diversity at GM is defined as the collective mix of peoples' differences in the workplace, society, families and communities. "Many People, One GM, Now" reflects GM's global Diversity and sends the message that differences are respected, that there are common goals and objectives, and that the ability to go fast, have "gotta have" products and to contribute to customer enthusiasm depends on how effectively GM employees and its suppliers work together.

Through a well-defined strategy, tactics, tools and resources, GM's Diversity Initiatives division helps raise awareness and recognize and overcome the barriers that get in the way of work and positive relationships. It also helps to leverage differences as a competitive advantage for better problem-solving, more innovation and creativity, better products and services and, ultimately, meeting customer needs.

Housed in the Public Policy Center, GM's Diversity Initiatives division has a global reach and extensive network of leaders and volunteers who are involved in the Diversity Network.

Principle #6: Promote fair competition including respect for intellectual and other property rights, and not offer, pay or accept bribes.

The General Motors/United Negro College Fund Sullivan Fellowship Program was developed as a tribute to Reverend Leon H. Sullivan’s mission and his Global Sullivan Principles. The Fellowship Program, now in its fifth year, offers the opportunity for current and future undergraduate and graduate students to learn, apply and extend the concepts of Rev. Sullivan in their professional lives and within their communities.

The Sullivan Fellowship Program provides students and faculty with scholarships and stipends as incentive to develop and deliver courses, workshops and seminars to promote the Rev. Sullivan legacy at GM Key Institutions.

The Sullivan Fellowship Program also provides an opportunity for outstanding students to participate in a paid summer internship at General Motors.
