The impetus for the creation of the Global Sullivan Principles came in the aftermath of South Africa’s transition to democracy. Various world leaders asked Reverend Dr. Leon H. Sullivan to develop a successor corporate code of conduct to the Sullivan Principles that had contributed to the peaceful dismantling of apartheid.  After consulting with leaders from business, government, human rights organizations and education institutions throughout the world, and receiving strong encouragement from them, Reverend Sullivan accepted this challenge.

In close consultation with Reverend Sullivan, a Core Committee of leaders from multi-national corporations and business associations designed the Global Sullivan Principles. After nearly four years of deliberations and discussions, the Global Sullivan Principles were announced at a special ceremony at the United Nations on November 2, 1999, with UN Secretary General Kofi Annan.

After the launch of the GSP, the members of the Core Committee continued to meet regularly with Reverend Sullivan.

As with any business venture, a few of the players have changed over the years, but the mission and the commitment of today’s Core Committee members remain as steadfast ever.  Their expertise in the area of corporate social responsibility is unparalleled, their advice and input is invaluable and the time they donate to this effort is deeply appreciated.  GSP staff has monthly conference calls with the Core Committee and organizes meetings when needed.
