UPCOMING EVENT: PRESIDENTIAL TOWN HALL MEETING
About the Presidential Town Hall
- Every four years, during the Presidential election cycle in America, efforts are made to determine the various policies of Democrat and Republican candidates. In the continual struggle to glean their views on a variety of issues, Africa policy is always at the bottom of the list. Given the range of important Africa matters attracting public concern and affection our national interests such as Darfur, debt, transparency, trade capacity, transmission of disease and environmental degradation, it is critical that those who seek our nation’s highest office let the public know where they stand on America’s relationship with the nations of Africa.
The Leon H. Sullivan Foundation, in partnership with the following institutions, came together to represent and inform the millions of Americans who are stakeholders. :
Africa Action
Africa Faith and Justice Network
African PAC
Africare
The Africa Society of the National Summit on Africa
Amnesty International – USA
Constituency for Africa
Education Africa USA
National Endowment for Democracy Africa Program
Partnership to Cut Hunger and Poverty in Africa
Phelps Stokes Fund
Publish What You Pay
Save Darfur Coalition
US Africa Sister Cities Foundation
The Town Hall was organized into three phases:
Phase One: Questionnaire prepared for U.S. presidential candidates on Africa policy which contains approximately 10 questions covering a range of issues. The questionnaire was sent out to candidates by June 1st.
Phase Two: The Presidential Town Hall Meeting on Africa to be held to analyze the candidates' responses.
Phase Three: There will be a coalition effort to influence the drafting of the Africa portion of the platforms for both major political parties. Using the results of the questionnaires and the Town Hall Meeting, we will have ample material to include (expressed or endorsed by candidates from each party) such that our suggestions should have excellent traction for African foreign policy designs.
